She also talked to store owners and museum managers to determine their interest in ordering. This marketing move landed them a job of photo decorating PJ McIntyre’s Restaurant in a Cleveland shopping center. “We tied in the nostalgia theme of the restaurant by contacting area historical societies and arranging to have their vintage photographs copied. It’s important to make sure you have the right to reuse the prints. Ask for proper releases and permission to use whatever photos you have copied,” advises Leslie.
She stresses the importance of networking industry contacts. A decorating firm they worked with on one project led to additional work when that firm recommended Leslie and her partners to some of their other clients.
Since 1987, the photo decorating business has progressed well since its initial unprofitable photo event ventures. Major projects include photo decorating the guest rooms and suites for the historic Glidden House, which has been made into a unique bed and breakfast, and an all-sports photo motif for the Grand Slam Bar & Restaurant in the refurbished Cleveland Flats night spot area.
“From our humble beginnings, we’re now getting into some pretty good sized jobs,” says Leslie. “Just keep bumbling along – don’t give up.”

Common sense tells us that this must be so. But common sense is a rare commodity in the real world and even rarer when it comes to anything to do with the Internet, an unreal world if ever there was one.
There are a LOT of people running so-called “Internet businesses”. A goodly proportion of these people are the ones touting the aforementioned “bizopp” pipe dreams. This is good news for you, believe it or not. Why? Because, despite how it may sometimes seem, your REAL competition is relatively small in number. After all, if 98% of those doing business online are unsuccessful (and promoting get rich quick schemes is the best way I know to make it into that elite group of 98 percenters), that leaves the field wide open for the 2% who are actually prepared to do some real work.
So don’t for a minute think that the Internet playing field is all sown up. It isn’t. All that buzzing in the background is the little kids down the other end of the field playing make-believe. There’s still plenty of room to run on the field with the real players.
So, accept the fact that there’s no such thing as something for nothing and you really are going to have to work for a living after all. Then create something original which meets the needs of one or more target markets and get to work.

Profitability of Seminars

Gleeck goes on to suggest revenue per person (attending the seminar) per minute (of time invested in presenting the seminar) as a yardstick of a financially successful seminar. Gleeck also discusses price testing of your seminars to maximize profitability.
Gleeck is a strong proponent of the back-end profitability of seminars. Rather than just maximizing the seminar registration revenue, Gleeck suggests that the key to seminar success is maximizing the total revenue that the seminar generates for you.
Gleeck expresses this as: TR = SR + PS + CB, which says that the total revenue generated by a seminar is the sum of the seminar registration fees plus the product sales generated during the seminar plus the consulting business generated by the seminar. (In fact, Gleeck point out that seminars are a great way to generate business if you are a consultant)
To be able to maximize seminar profitability, Gleeck suggests calculating the lifetime value of your seminar customers. Then, you know how much you can spend on marketing to acquire new customers.
Gleeck also says that you should record your seminars. In addition to allowing you to critique your performance, Gleeck writes:
“… you may capture a ‘magic moment’ on tape. What is a magic moment? This is where you do or say something to your audience that brings the house down. They either laugh or cry or explode with applause and adulation. You want to have this on tape. Take all of the magic moments and cut them together and you will have a phenomenal demo video or audio that you can use to promote yourself as a speaker and seminar leader.”

Other Revenue Opportunities

Gleeck is also a strong supporter of recording your seminars to sell audio tapes to people who want to hear the seminar but were not be able to attend. At $197 a pop, it’s easy to see how selling seminar tapes can add to the bottom line. Gleeck says successful seminar promoters often generate 50% or more of their profits from the sales of tapes, videos, books, and other products.
What about people who don’t want to sell products at their seminars? Gleeck tells them to get over it. He says selling products is too profitable to pass up. Gleeck suggests creating products at many different price points and upselling to generate more revenue. Gleeck says leave your books at home–they just aren’t profitable enough.
Gleeck also says that your seminar products must not only be good, they must be great (and, of course, he has a way to measure this–rates of return and rates of customer repeat business). Gleeck also points out that withholding valuable information in an attempt to upsell customers to higher-priced products is a failing strategy. Rather, Gleeck argues that you want to make your information so useful that customers want more.

Doing four totally different businesses with different target markets is the wrong way to establish multiple streams of income. Why?
1. You appear schizophrenic to everyone you meet.
Although she was a nice woman, I wouldn’t recommend any of her four businesses to anyone because I just don’t know where her time and energy are being spent or how well she would service a client.
2. You waste time and energy working to capture the attention of multiple markets.
Networking and building relationships take time. Most of the time your different target markets are going to be hanging out at different meetings and places. To connect with them, you need to be here they are and that’s a lot of running around.
3. Your mind has to keep track of systems and information for four companies.
Between policies, specials and product knowledge, you could spend a day each week just staying informed. Don’t get involved in too many businesses and kill any chance of success for any of them.

How to Create Multiple Streams of Income – The Right Way

There are two ways to create multiple streams of income that make sense:
  • Same target market, multiple offerings.
  • Same offering, multiple target markets.
In the first way to create multiple streams of income, you provide more products and services to the same target market. For example, a personal trainer might sell their clients hand weights, exercise DVDs, nutrition counseling and fitness vacations.
When you add products and services to your mix make sure that you understand your target market. Starbucks made a serious mistake in this category years ago when they assumed their coffee drinkers would like to buy the furniture found in Starbucks locations. They did not. The website tanked within a matter of months.
However, Starbucks does have a number of multiple streams. In their stores, they sell coffee machines, mugs, chocolate covered coffee beans and lunch items. You can also purchase their coffee and bottled frappucino in grocery stores and I’m not sure if it’s nationwide yet, but Starbucks just launched a line of ice cream. These items have added some nice multiple streams of income for them while serving their target market.
The second way to create multiple streams of income is to market the same product or service to multiple markets. If you are a small business, and especially if you are a solopreneur, this approach is more difficult than the first one because you have to have the time to research and get in front of two to three distinct sets of people.
An example of an industry that does this well is the airline industry. They provide one service: flying people from one destination to another.
Most airlines cater to three distinct target markets.
  • Business travelers
  • Vacationers
  • Affluent travelers
Airlines offer levels of service for each distinct traveler. Affluent travelers pay a premium to sit in First Class, get served meals off actual plates and get on and off the plane first. Airlines working to garner the business travelers offer a business class section with a bit larger seats than coach class and tout the features of their airport lounges where business travelers can conduct meetings, log onto the Internet or relax away from the chaos of the main terminal. Lastly, airlines partner with hotels, travel agents and travel websites to lure the vacation travelers to use their service.
There are a few benefits of offering a single service to multiple target markets. If you only have one service you can keep refining and honing that service to make it the very best. If one target market stops or slows down their purchasing, the business can focus on marketing more heavily to their other markets.
We have seen this happen this year. Business travel is down, partly due to the economy, but partly due to technology that allows web-conferencing and online trainings. As a result, airlines are stepping up their vacation packages and advertising to vacation travelers.
Not all airlines take this one-service, multiple streams approach. For example, Southwest Airlines targets the bargain hunting traveler. This traveler wants the least expensive seat even if it means standing in lines and not getting served any food. To add some multiple streams, Southwest sells food and you can purchase a more expensive Business Select ticket which allows you to board the plane first.
When considering which approach is best for your business, consider the following questions:
  • What other products and services compliment your main product or service?
  • How likely are clients/customers to want to get those additional items from me?
  • How large and how stable is my main target market?
I recommend building multiple streams into your initial business model, even if you aren’t going to launch them for a year or two after you start the business.
